Nov 30, 2017 · At any rate, Poe makes a sharp distinction between “the truthful and the poetical modes” of apprehension and inculcation. Truth, he says, demands a severity of language: “We must be simple, precise, terse. We must be cool, calm, unimpassioned.”. Such a mood, says Poe, “is the exact converse of the poetical” (“PP,” 893).
