When Marnie Was There is my favorite Ghibli movie but I always heard Mary and the Witch's Flower, the follow-up from Marnie director Hiromasa Yonebayashi, wasn't great. Now that I've seen it...it's fun and the animation's as gorgeous as ever, but it feels pretty slight.

May 2, 2024 · Her friendship with two stray cats named Tib and Gib adds an endearing touch to the story. Magical, whimsical, with plenty of comical and light-hearted moments, all complemented by a subtly pleasing soundtrack, “Mary and the Witch’s Flower” makes for a entertaining visual experience.
I wanted to love Mary and the witch’s flower, for all the reasons you mentioned, but was kind of put off by it halfway through the movie. I’d give it a 4/10, probably wouldn’t watch it a second time. Do you know of any ghibli-esque movies that are worth watching? Always on the hunt for new ones!!
