The Heidelberg Project is an outdoor art project in the McDougall-Hunt neighborhood on Detroit 's east side, just north of the city's historically African-American Black Bottom area. It was created in 1986 by the artist Tyree Guyton, who was assisted by his wife, Karen, and grandfather Sam Mackey ("Grandpa Sam"). [1]

In 1986, artist Tyree Guyton returned to Heidelberg, the street where he grew up on Detroit’s East Side, and found it in shambles, riddled with drugs and deepening poverty. Bruised by the loss of three brothers to the streets, Guyton was encouraged by his grandfather to pick up a paintbrush instead of a weapon and look for a solution.

2007. Connecting the Dots, Tyree Guyton’s Heidelberg Project wins two awards, the Michigan Notable Book Award, the Eric Hoffer Award. Wayne State University and Guyton wins Joyce Award celebrating the 20th anniversary of the HP. Guyton exhibits at Western Michigan University and receives a Pollock Krasner award.
