Joseph rises in power in Egypt, and when a terrible famine occurs in the land, the Israelite family is forced to go to Egypt to ask for food for their tribe, and it's Joseph who gives it to them and invites them to live with him in Egypt. After generations and generations of being in Egypt, the Hebrew people are forced into a terrible slavery.
Joseph is an anticipatory fulfilment of the covenant and thus provides literary and redemptive-historical resolution to the Genesis narrative. Joseph also points forward to a more complete fulfilment of the patriarchal hopes expressed in the Abrahamic covenant.
At the Exodus, the mumified remains of Joseph were taken from Egypt and, following the Conquest, they were buried at Shechem (Exod 13:19; Josh 24:32). Most scholars suggest that Joseph rose to prominence during the Second Intermediate, or Hyksos period of Egyp. history (c. 1780-1570 b.c. ).
