Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, Doran graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz and then moved to London where she was a contributor to The Oxford Companion to Film and The World Encyclopedia of Film. Upon her return stateside, Doran worked as a producer of local documentaries for a Pennsylvania television station.
