His works often show strong modeling and sharp contrasts of light, resembling the dramatic lighting technique called tenebrism .
Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez, Knight of the Order of Santiago (baptized 6 June 1599 – 6 August 1660) was a Spanish painter, the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV of Spain and Portugal, and of the Spanish Golden Age. He was an individualistic artist of the Baroque period (c. 1600–1750).

Jan 1, 2016 · In the final years of his life, despite his well-known phlegm and many worries, Velázquez added two masterful canvases to his oeuvre, both of which were original, new and practically unclassifiable: The Spinners or Fable of Arachne (ca. 1657, Museo del Prado), and the most famous of all, Las Meninas (1656, Museo del Prado).
Having created a group of mythological scenes for the Alcázar palace, the artist's last years were mostly taken up with royal portraits such as the Gallery's Philip IV of Spain. In his most famous work, 'Las Meninas' (The Maids of Honour) he shows himself at work in the court.
