E-mu Systems was a software synthesizer, audio interface, MIDI interface, and MIDI keyboard manufacturer. Founded in 1971 as a synthesizer maker, E-mu was a pioneer in samplers, sample-based drum machines and low-cost digital sampling music workstations.

E-mu originally considered selling the design for the Emulator to Sequential Circuits, which was using E-mu's keyboard design in its Prophet-5 synthesizer. However, Sequential Circuits ceased paying E-mu royalties for its keyboard design, which prompted E-mu to release the Emulator commercially.

Jul 6, 2015 · The closest hardware is E’mu’s Proteus-2000 synth and Ultra sampler families, which both include a limited set of Z-plane filters and limited or no morphing (the manuals are unclear, and I haven’t had a chance to demo either recently).
