Magnus Magnentius ( c. 303 – 10 August 353) was a Roman general and usurper against Constantius II. Of Germanic descent, Magnentius served with distinction in Gaul under the emperor Constans. On 18 January 350 Magnentius was acclaimed Augustus. Quickly killing the unpopular Constans, Magnentius gained control over most of the Western Empire.

views updated. Magnentius, a usurping emperor 350–3, was at his elevation an army commander in Britain. He was probably born at Amiens. In 350 he was proclaimed emperor by the Gallic cabal which deposed Constans. He crossed to the continent and was defeated by Constantius II at the costly battle of Mursa in Pannonia in 351.
