He had an ownership stake in many casinos throughout his career, but he is best known for his ownership of the El Cortez, where he resided until his death on March 12, 2014. [2]

Gaughan was one of 22 Irish republicans to die on hunger strike in the 20th century, which had started with the 1923 Irish Hunger Strikes.
