WILLIAM MARSHAL (II) (died 1231) The first of the five sons of William Marshal (I) who in turn became earls of Pembroke. In 1220 his domain in Dyfed was attacked by Llywelyn ap Iorwerth who had complained of the inroads made by the earl's tenants on the Welsh in spite of the truce. On appeal to the king a settlement was concluded.
The title of earl of Pembroke was next revived in favour of SIR William Herbert (C. 1501-1570), whose father, Richard, was an illegitimate son of the ist earl of Pembroke of the house of Herbert. He had married Anne Parr, sister of Henry VIII.'s sixth wife, and was created earl in 1551. The title has since been held by his descendants.
Having received the submission of Pembroke castle, a Lancastrian stronghold, Herbert was given the custody of the young Henry, earl of Richmond, whom he betrothed in his will to his daughter Maud; he was made a K.G. (April 1462) and became a member of the king's Inner Council.
