Jan 4, 2019 · In the late 19th Century, Southern Gospel was the genre that started bringing religious songs outside of the church. What started out as all-male, mostly a cappella quartets has grown and evolved to include solo artists, female and mixed groups and full musical instrumentation.
The best known group of the 1950s and 1960s was the Statesmen Quartet, which set the trend for broad appeal of the all-male quartets that would develop years later. The Statesmen were known for their showmanship and introduction of jazz, ragtime, and even some early rock and roll.

The Happy Goodman Family is a Southern gospel group that was founded in the 1940s by Howard "Happy" Goodman and performed together for several decades.
