Leopold was the founder of the branch of the dynasty from which all the Habsburgs of the Early Modern era were to trace their descent. In 1365 at the age of fourteen his brother Rudolf arranged for him to be married to Viridis Visconti, who was about his own age.
Lords and Dukes of Milan. The Visconti ruled Milan until the early Renaissance, first as Lords, then, from 1395, with the mighty Gian Galeazzo, who endeavored to unify Northern Italy and Tuscany, as Dukes. Visconti rule in Milan ended with the death of Filippo Maria Visconti in 1447.

Wien u. a. 1984. Ernest was the third son of Duke Leopold III, the founder of the Leopoldine line of the Habsburgs, and Viridis Visconti. After the early death of his father – Ernest was twelve years old at the time – he was initially placed under the guardianship of his eldest brother William.
