Apr 5, 2024 · The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, originally located in Washington, D.C., and moved to Bethesda, Md., in 2011, was named in his honor. Reed was the youngest of five children of Lemuel Sutton Reed, a Methodist minister, and his first wife, Pharaba White.
Borden was instrumental in naming the new hospital after his friend, Major Walter Reed. In 1923, General John J. Pershing signed the order creating the Army Medical Center on the same campus as Walter Reed General Hospital.
