September 18, 1863. Surprise, confusion, and hard fighting replace the well-laid plans of General Bragg, who hoped to block LaFayette Road and cut the Union’s route to Chattanooga. As darkness falls, Bragg is still confident he can continue his plans and stop the Union Army in the morning.
In November 1863 the Union Army, reinforced by Generals Ulysses S. Grant, William Sherman, and Joseph Hooker, defeated the Confederates at Orchard Knob, Lookout Mountain, and Missionary Ridge. The Union army may have lost the Battle of Chickamauga, but they won control of Chattanooga and threw open the gateway to the Confederacy.
The Battle of Chickamauga, fought on September 18–20, 1863, between the United States Army and Confederate forces in the American Civil War, marked the end of a U.S. Army offensive, the Chickamauga Campaign, in southeastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia.

With 16,170 Union and 18,454 Confederate casualties, the Battle of Chickamauga was the second costliest battle of the Civil War, ranking only behind Gettysburg, and was by far the deadliest battle fought in the West. Fact #2: The Confederate forces outnumbered the Federals at Chickamauga.
Feb 28, 2024 · In the battle, the forces of Confederate General Braxton Bragg defeated Union General William Rosencrans, leading to the Siege of Chattanooga. Although Chickamauga was a Confederate victory, Bragg’s forces failed to destroy the Union Army of the Cumberland, allowing it to escape intact.
