I don't know why he left, but as a viewer I do know they weren't using him on the show anyway. As 30 Rock progressed, TGS became a smaller part of the the 30 Rock universe. Yeah, the show still had TGS, but the big hitters were Tracy and Jenna -- the secondary characters of TGS were left in the dust.
