Oct 27, 2019 · It depends a lot on the players style and touch, but I am of the opinion that roundwounds tend to cause fret or board wear faster on bass than on guitar. Guitarists that play hard and bend a lot might disagree.

Because to get a lower tone you must change the wavelength of the sound. So a longer neck makes for longer wavelengths with its longer strings. The frets are further apart because you have to adjust to length to get the same number of notes and properly affect the new wavelengths in their own measure to get the correct tones.
Since the relation betweeen stress and strain is constant, a tapered neck will deform more uniformly along its length under the load from the strings; a parallel neck would tend to bend from the heel. So the amount of taper will affect the shape the neck deforms to under the string load.
Mar 11, 2013 · For example, wider frets can produce a stronger tone, but as they wear, the guitar's intonation "drifts" farther than with narrow frets. But narrow wire has its drawbacks, too: Narrow frets won't cause your intonation to drift as much, but they wear down faster than wide frets.
Since most/all necks get wider as you work your way up the frets, the 1st fret is considerably shorter than the 20th fret. For example a typical Tele will have 1.650" nut width while the Butt Width (the width of the neck after the last fret) is 2.2". Each fret has to get a little longer to keep up with the widening of the fingerboard.
