This is done so that you see yourself like you're used to when you look at a mirror. Seeing yourself the other way will make you notice asymmetries in your face since you're not used to it.
Sometimes it’s quite legitimate in terms of they are actually following fair use principals (see the overlays Angry Joe puts over clips in his videos) and just don’t want to have to deal with the appeal system. Other times it’s used when fair use is dubious. I don’t think most people are doing it, but it undoubtedly happens.
The angle with which my thumb hit the (sharp edge of the) space bar in the normal orientation make it seem higher and causes strain on the thumb. Flipping it allows my thumb to hit the flat side making it seem lower and put less strain on the thumb. Comfort. If you like it then use it.
