A parish in Louisiana is the same as a county in most other states* in the United States. So, in Louisiana, instead of names like “Orange County” you'll have names like “Allen Parish”. *Louisiana and Alaska are the only 2 states that don't have counties (Alaska has boroughs).

Louisiana is the only state whose political subdivisions are parishes but not counties. It is divided into 64 perishes, of which 38 parishes are governed by the Police Jury council, other 26 parishes have different type of government, including the council-manager, consolidated parish/city, parish commission, and president-council.
