The two of them reflect on how long it’s been since Astrov first came to this house and how the years have changed him.

But all she does is eat, sleep, take walks, and enchant people with her beauty. Her life has no purpose. She has no responsibilities.
When Astrov returns, he mocks Vanya for having feelings for Helen, but Vanya will not admit it. Astrov leaves to get a drink; Sonya pulls him aside and makes him promise to stop drinking and stop getting her uncle drunk. He agrees. They continue to talk for a moment. He comments that Helen is beautiful but idle and useless.
