Pro-Ukraine militia says captures Russian soldiers
Reuters Videos9 hours agoSTORY: Grainy aerial footage released on Sunday (June 4) by a militant group of Russians fighting on behalf of Ukraine purports to show its members storming into a suburb of the Russian city of Belgorod. The Freedom of Russia Legion and another group, the Russian Volunteer Corps, have claimed they've conducted a number of cross-border raids into Russian territory from Ukraine. Last week, Moscow said two civilians were killed during fighting. In a video posted the Freedom of Russia's Telegram channel, a man identifying himself as the commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps said his fighters had captured two wounded Russian soldiers. The man offered to exchange them in a meeting with Belgorod's regional governor. The governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, responded on his own Telegram channel. Gladkov said there was a battle going on with saboteurs and terrorists in a Russian border town. He said he was willing to meet with the militants to ensure the return of captives, if they were alive. He gave the name of a border checkpoint and a time. But later on Sunday the militant group said it would hand over the prisoners to Ukraine after the governor failed to turn up as promised. Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year has in recent weeks and months come home to Russia. Gladkov said Ukrainian forces shelled Belgorod over the weekend, adding that 4,000 residents were relocated for safety. Ukraine has denied attacks inside Russia. Meanwhile Russian bombardment of Ukrainian cities continues. Ukrainian officials said a Russian missile attack on the city of Dnipro killed a two-year-old girl and injured at least 22 people. Reuters could not independently verify the report. There was no immediate reaction from Moscow. The border skirmishes and airstrikes come as Ukraine readies an expected counter-attack against Russian forces occupying swaths of Ukrainian territory in the country's east. Kyiv on Sunday made a plea for operational silence ahead of the assault, discouraging public speculation over when and where it might strike.

- 01:23Russia blocking grain export deal, Ukraine saysReuters VideosSTORY: Ukraine says Russia is again blocking the U.N.-backed Black Sea grain deal. Kyiv accused Moscow on Thursday (June 1) of halting the registration of ships to all Ukrainian ports. A U.N spokesman said Russia told officials it would limit registrations to the port of Pivdennyi in Ukraine's Odesa province. The U.N. and Turkey brokered the Black Sea Grain Initiative last July. It is designed to tackle a global food crisis made worse by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which is a leading grain exporter. Russia agreed to a two-month extension of the deal in May. But it now says it will halt the deal unless an agreement is fulfilled to overcome obstacles to exports of its own grain and fertilizer. The U.N. said there had been a "continuous slowdown" in vessel departures from April through May. It also said the average daily inspection rate for ships had fallen to three. The Ukrainian ministry claimed Russia had registered only one incoming ship for inspection in the last two days of May. It called that a "gross violation" of the initiative. Russia did not immediately comment on the ministry's statement. Kyiv said 50 vessels were waiting for inspection in Turkish waters, ready to deliver 2.4 million tonnes of Ukrainian food abroad. Some vessels had waited for inspections for more than 3 months.3 days ago

- 02:03Ukraine war comes to Moscow as both capitals hitReuters VideosSTORY: Russia says that Ukraine launched its biggest ever drone attack on Moscow on Tuesday (May 30) - but all eight drones were destroyed by its air defenses. One politician branded it the worst attack on the capital since World War Two. The incident coincided with the latest wave of airstrikes on Kyiv, marking a moment where both capitals were hit on the same day. Some of Moscow’s most prestigious areas were reportedly hit by drone debris, including Leninsky Prospekt, a grand avenue crafted under Josef Stalin, and an elite area of western Moscow where President Vladimir Putin has a residence. The capital’s mayor said two people were injured, with one hospitalized, in the early morning attack. A Ukrainian official denied Kyiv’s involvement in the Moscow attack, but said Ukraine was “enjoying” watching the strike and forecast more to come. Across the border, Kyiv was hit on Tuesday for the third time in 24 hours - and for the 17th time in May. Ukrainian defense forces said they shot down more than 20 Iranian-made Shahed drones. Kyiv's mayor Vitali Klitschko responded to the attack. "Putin needs Ukraine without Ukrainians. It's terrorism, everyone - yes of course - is worried about that. Russians want to bring depression to our people. Instead of depression, the people are very angry." Officials said at least one person died and others were injured when debris from a destroyed Russian projectile hit a high-rise apartment building causing a fire. Kyiv’s head of military administration called the strikes “massive”, as photos showed flames engulfing the top of the building. Ukraine is promising a counter-offensive backed with Western weapons to try to drive Russian occupiers from seized territory. Moscow says it is open to resuming stalled peace talks with Kyiv and has welcomed mediation efforts from Brazil and China. But Kyiv insists full withdrawal of Russian troops is the only way to end the war.6 days ago

- 01:40Ukraine posts longer video of Lindsay Graham's visitReuters VideosSTORY: Russia's interior ministry has put U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham on a wanted list, Russian news agency TASS said on Monday (May 29). In an edited video released by the Ukrainian president's office of Graham's meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday (May 26), Graham was shown saying "the Russians are dying" and then saying U.S. support was the "best money we've ever spent". After Russia criticised the remarks, Ukraine released a full video of the meeting which showed the two remarks were not linked. The longer video clip shoed the Ukrainian President praises the United States for military assistance valued at $38 billion, thanking Graham for bipartisan support. Graham responds with: "the best money we've ever spent." Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denounced Graham, suggesting his comment on U.S. financial assistance was linked to a later remark that Russians "are dying" in the conflict. But the release by the Ukrainian president's office of Graham's complete remarks showed there was no such link. Graham said he was visiting on the 457th day of a war that Russia had assumed would be completed within three days and Graham said Ukrainians resisting the invasion reminded him of "our better selves in America. "There was a time in America that we were this way: fighting to the last person, we were going to be free or die." "Now you are free," Zelenskiy responded in the encounter. "And we will be." Graham replied: "And the Russians are dying."7 days ago
