Aug 27, 2019 · The traditional festival venue has been, since its inauguration in 1937, the Palazzo del Cinema at the Lido (the long, thin island across the lagoon, reached by vaporetto). However, in 1946, as the Palace had been confiscated by the Allies, the Festival was held in the San Marco Cinema, before moving to the Palazzo Ducale the following year.
The building proposed here is thus oriented toward the city of canals rather than toward the sea. Though quite removed from Venice, it is intended to have the attributes of a Venetian palace. Among other things, this means endowing it with a permanent awareness of the city’s mysterious presence.

The Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido di Venezia is the main headquarters for the Venice International Film Festival. Built in record time in the Modernist style of the time, it was inaugurated on August 10th 1937 for the fifth edition of the Festival.
Designed and completed in 1937, the Palazzo del Cinema was built on the Lido. It has since been the site for every Venice Film Festival, except the three years from 1940 to 1942, when it was held outside of Venice fear of bombing that never came.

The exhibition gained increasing prestige, and in 1937 the Palazzo del Cinema was inaugurated, a new venue designed to accommodate an audience that was growing year by year. The Palace has undergone several extensions, alterations and restorations over the decades, and the version we see today is the culmination of the latest work begun in 2016.
Inaugurated in August 1932 on the terrace of the Excelsior, the festival was the first of its kind (Cannes was a relative latecomer in 1946) and capitalised on the boom in the film-making industry.
