The most striking of Kutná Hora is the church of Saint Barbara, the Gothic jewel whose interior is decorated with frescoes depicting the secular life of the medieval mining town of Kutná Hora. This piece of art had a major influence on the architecture of central Europe.

In 1421–24, Kutná Hora was captured by the Hussites, recaptured by Emperor Sigismund, and captured again and burned by John Zizka. In the Middle Ages, Kutná Hora was, after Prague, the second-most important town in the Kingdom of Bohemia. Builders and buyers of works of art did not wish to lag behind Prague, and so they always invited the most important builders and artists, who were also busy in the capital, to work on their grand projects.
