Mar 21, 2024 · In 2022, a total of 3,279,857 resident deaths were registered in the United States—184,374 fewer deaths than in 2021. The number of deaths for which COVID-19 was the underlying cause of death decreased 55.3% from 416,893 in 2021 to 186,552 in 2022.

The age-adjusted rate of drug overdose deaths increased from 8.2 deaths per 100,000 standard population in 2002 to 32.6 in 2022; however, the rate did not significantly change between 2021 and 2022. Rates decreased between 2021 and 2022 for people ages 15–34 and increased for those age 35 and older.

Feb 29, 2024 · Average annual deaths from excessive alcohol use in the United States increased 5.3%, from 137,927 during 2016–2017 to 145,253 during 2018–2019; these deaths then increased more sharply (22.8%) from 2018–2019 to 178,307 during 2020–2021, for an overall 29.3% increase from 2016–2017 to 2020–2021 ( Table 1 ).
