The nation of Georgia ( Georgian: საქართველო sakartvelo) was first unified as a kingdom under the Bagrationi dynasty by the King Bagrat III of Georgia in the early 11th century, arising from a number of predecessor states of the ancient kingdoms of Colchis and Iberia.
Georgia is a mountainous country situated almost entirely in the South Caucasus, while some slivers of the country are situated north of the Caucasus Watershed in the North Caucasus. [164] [165] The country lies between latitudes 41° and 44° N, and longitudes 40° and 47° E, with an area of 67,900 km 2 (26,216 sq mi).
The Trustees governed Georgia until 1752, when they surrendered their charter. Georgia then became a crown colony.
