The Lincoln Highway (1913-1930) was the original transcontinental highway in the United States. It was one of various "auto trails", a motley assortment of named routes marked by private organizations and trail associations (such as the Lincoln Highway Association) in the early days of the mass-produced automobile.
Picking a Route. On July 1, 1913, the association decided to call the coast-to-coast highway the Lincoln Highway, and it was officially incorporated as the Lincoln Highway Association. Henry Joy was elected as president. Carl Fisher, who was elected vice-president, was not present.
