- 1987 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4. The immediate predecessor to the Lancer Evolution is the Galant VR-4. Introduced in 1987, the Galant VR-4 featured the same turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and accompanying all-wheel-drive system that would come to be used in the Lancer Evolution.
