Born in 1876, Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb later joined the 4th Field Artillery Regiment in and served as an artillery officer in World War One. In 1929 he was promoted to the rank of major general. In 1934, he became commander of the 2 nd Gruppenkommando (Army Group Headquarters).
