Apr 19, 2023 · Billy the Kid was a notorious criminal in the Wild West. His story became legendary, and his death created more myths than reality. Billy the Kid was orphaned at the age of 15. His first arrest was for stealing food at the age of 16 in 1875. Ten days later, he robbed a Chinese laundry and was arrested again but escaped shortly afterward.
On the run for two years, the Kid was eventually captured, tried, convicted and returned to Lincoln to hang for the murders. However, Lincoln's makeshift jail was no match for Billy the Kid. On the evening of April 28, 1881 as he was climbing the steps returning him to his cell, the Kid made a mad dash, grabbed a six-shooter and shot his guard.

Very interesting. Written in 1882, the year after Billy the Kid's death, the writing style is so very different from today's style of writing. Billy, aka William H. Bonney, was born as Henry McCarty in New York. His parents migrated west and after his father died, his mother remarried a man who did not care for her children.
