William Crapo Durant (December 8, 1861 – March 18, 1947) was a leading pioneer of the United States automobile industry and co-founder of General Motors and Chevrolet. He created a system in which a company held multiple marques – each seemingly independent, with different automobile lines – bound under a unified corporate holding company.

Sep 16, 2023 · Buick Motor Car company owner William C. Durant leveraged an engine supply deal with McLaughlin Motor Car Company of Canada to found General Motors on this day in 1908. In the beginning, the Detroit headquartered GM , which positioned it self as an automotive holding company, had only Buick, under its umbrella.
In 1910, Durant lost control of GM to the bank, but after forming Chevrolet Motor Company in 1911, with Louis Chevrolet, was able to buy it back in 1916. In 1920, Durant agreed to resign from GM in exchange for GM president Pierre du Pont paying off his debts.
