Wimbledon Common consists mainly of a plateau of acidic grassland, the most notable area being The Plain. Scarcely a crest breaks the smooth table and nowhere can you find a summit. Soils are impoverished gravels, ideal for heathland and bogs.
Wimbledon and Putney Commons are 1,140 acres of countryside amidst the urban surroundings of Wimbledon, Putney and Kingston-upon-Thames. Run by a charity, the commons are a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.

Go for a leisurely stroll on Wimbledon Common in south-west London and discover a habitat rich in plants and wildlife. Animals that visit the common include badgers, foxes, rabbits and bats. There are also plenty of fish, amphibians and reptiles attracted to the ponds and lakes.
