WOOD COUNTY was formed from old Indian Territory, April 1, 1820, and named from the brave and chivalrous Col. Wood, a distinguished officer of engineers in the war of 1812. The surface is level, and covered by the black swamp, the soil of which is a rich, black loam, and very fertile, and peculiarly well adapted to grazing.

County Information. Wood County was founded on April 1, 1820 and named in honor of Captain Eleazer Darby Wood, an engineer in the War of 1812 who built Fort Meigs. The early Wood County area was home of many Indian tribes including the Ottawa, Shawnee, and Miami.
