  4. County Information. Wood County was founded on April 1, 1820 and named in honor of Captain Eleazer Darby Wood, an engineer in the War of 1812 who built Fort Meigs. The early Wood County area was home of many Indian tribes including the Ottawa, Shawnee, and Miami.
