They are everyday women who all live in a world where men rule business and women rule the office. In this comedy hit of the summer, the story begins with Paula, (Eugene Domingo) the daughter-in-law of Nimfa (Gina Pareño). She is the queen of fake designer bags. She gets high earnings from her living and uses them to put her children through private school, something that her irresponsible and unemployed husband cannot provide. Then there is a single mom, Ada (Jennylyn Mercado), a young woman who is a call center agent by night and a student by day, working hard to provide for her young son. In the process, she neglects her son and puts additional strain on her relationship with her mother, Sabel (Rio Locsin). Perhaps, the issue lies not with the movie, but how certain representations are not translated well across cultural and temporal barriers. This applies to most of the movie, in fact. It’s either empty or full of smart political innuendos. Comedy material is either hilariously B-grade, or is a biting mockery of Filipino 80s corporate culture.
^ Working Girls is basically a story of six young women in a 1984 Filipino corporate setting. It depicts how women climb up to the top of the corporate ladder; one used her amazing skills in blackmail, one used her college degree, another used her biting personality while another one just simply slept with every new boss that comes around you get the idea.
