     Exchanges will usually publish an up-to-date list of securities on their web pages. For example, these pages offer CSV downloads:

     • http://www.nasdaq.com/screening/companies-by-industry.aspx?exchange=NYSE&render=download
     • http://www.asx.com.au/asx/research/ASXListedCompanies.csv

     NASDAQ Updated their site, so you will have to modify the URLS:

     NASDAQ

     • https://old.nasdaq.com/screening/companies-by-name.aspx?letter=0&exchange=nasdaq&render=download

     AMEX

     • https://old.nasdaq.com/screening/companies-by-name.aspx?letter=0&exchange=amex&render=download

     NYSE

     Depending on your requirement, you could create the map of these URLs by exchange in your own code.

     Super ugly and error prone but better than nothing:

     You could extend this code using things like fuzzywuzzy and an ordinary testing module with doctest. Do not use this code in production.

     I am not even sure if this call keeps the order of the returned values:

     yq.search(company_name)["quotes"]-

     So this code might actually behave randomly but it might give you a direction.

     So, as you've already discovered, having the suffix is necessary to retrieving data from that (and all other) endpoints. What you could do before making the request to that endpoint is use their search endpoint to find the symbol with the appropriate suffix:
