Portrait of the Artist is the second episode of the fourth season of You, and the thirty-second episode of the series overall. It premiered on Netflix on February 9, 2023.

Joe leans on his skills — and a student's insights — to catch his stalker. An art show offers a gallery of suspects, revealing more than the eye can see.

Joe spends the evening in a state of intense unease, suspecting the mysterious texting murderer is possibly one of the members of the elite group in attendance at the dinner.

More taunting messages the following day indicate an interest in who “Johnathan” really is, which makes Joe anxious and suspicious.

While searching for clues to the possible killer, Joe follows Phoebe’s boyfriend Adam to the backroom of a business where he witnesses, to his shock, the boyfriend enthusiastically receiving a golden shower from a member of the wait staff. Then he is confronted by a member of Phoebe’s security, Vic,  for spying on the incident.

He attends an art gallery opening, again at the invitation of Phoebe, mingling once more with all the possible suspects, and meeting more members of the inner circle who could be suspects as well. He starts to settle on Adam as his main suspect, but when he seems to imply that Malcolm had been blackmailing him, he questions why the true killer would tell him this so casually. He comes upon Rhys and has a brief conversation, questioning why Rhys is friends with the rest of the people there, as he does not seem to be the same as them. Rhys explains they have been friends for a long time, and the longer that you know someone like that the more you see them as human and accept them as they are.

They are interrupted by a commotion where a young woman interrupts the event, confronting the artist, Simon, and throwing paint on some of the art. She is quickly ushered away, and Simon pretends it was meant as a part of the show. However, Joe over hears him insisting Kate find her and make her pay for her outburst. Joe tells Kate he can help her find the woman, and together they track her to a seedy part of town. The woman, Blue, tells them that she was Simon’s assistant, and he had gotten her hooked on drugs and used her to paint works that he claimed as his own- and she was only one of many he had done this to. Kate writes the girl a check and sees herself out, but Joe hangs behind asking if Malcolm had come to her about this before, which she confirms he had claiming he was going to expose Simon, but used it to blackmail him instead.

Suspecting Simon, he watches him from a distance in hopes of getting confirmation, but instead falls asleep on a bench across the street and wakes up to police surrounding the building and Simon murdered inside.
