- How to Prune Coreopsis In early spring, just as new growth begins, cut back the entire plant to about 4-6 inches above the ground. Use clean, sharp gardening shears for a smooth cut, which is less stressful for the plant. Pruning can also be done after the first flush of flowers to rejuvenate the plant and encourage a second blooming.
