Founding & History. The ZKM | Center for Art and Media was founded in 1989 by the city of Karlsruhe and the state of Baden-Württemberg as a public foundation. This unique cultural institute was called to life with the constitution of the board of trustees and the appointment of Professor Heinrich Klotz (1935–1999) as founding director.
The ZKM is an institution of all media and genres, a house of both spatial arts such as painting, photography and sculpture and time-based arts such as film, video, media art, music, dance, theater and performance. Founded in 1989 with the mission of continuing the classical arts into the digital age, the ZKM is also called the digital Bauhaus.
ZKM international. ZKM is closely networked internationally and realizes traveling exhibitions worldwide in cooperation with local partners. Currently, exhibitions are scheduled in France and India.
