Located in the Uintah-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Big Cottonwood Canyon is home to Solitude and Brighton ski resorts. Both have full-service, year-round facilities. From Brighton there are several easy trails leading to various lakes, including Twin Lakes, Lake Mary, Lake Martha, and Dog Lake.
- Broads Fork Trail. Distance: about 4.7 miles roundtrip. Elevation Gain: 2046 feet. Difficulty: Moderate. I think this is one of the most underrated hikes in Big Cottonwood Canyon!
- Lake Blanche. Distance: about 6.4 miles roundtrip. Elevation Gain: 2,753 feet. Difficulty: Moderate. No Big Cottonwood Canyon hiking list would be complete without talking about the Lake Blanche trail.
- Hidden Falls. Distance: about 0.2 miles roundtrip. Elevation Gain: 170 feet. Difficulty: Very Easy. Hidden Falls is a beautiful waterfall that’s not too far from the parking lot.
- Moss Ledge Waterfall. Distance: about 0.5 miles roundtrip (but GPS is hard to track on this hike) Elevation Gain: about 531 feet. Difficulty: Moderate. This is a really cool waterfall if you’re willing to work for it.

Big Cottonwood Canyon is a quick 25 minutes away from Salt Lake International Airport (22 miles), and is home to two world-class ski resorts (Solitude & Brighton), legendary rock climbing routes, epic backcountry skiing access, hiking and mountain biking trails, and picnic areas straight out of an outdoor magazine.
Big Cottonwood Canyon is a beautiful place, and it is just a couple of minutes away from Salt Lake City. There are countless hikes, campgrounds, and places to explore in both this canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon, which is nearby. Definitely a must-see.

Aug 30, 2023 · Big Cottonwood Canyon is one of our favorite places along the Wasatch Front. On hot summer days it is generally 10-15 degrees cooler up the canyon than in the valley. We’ve found a lot of great hikes and we’ve gathered them all in this post.
