Weaver's two most famous roles were as Marshal Matt Dillon's trusty deputy Chester Goode/Proudfoot on the western Gunsmoke and as Deputy Marshal Sam McCloud on the police drama McCloud. He starred in the 1971 television film Duel, the first film of director Steven Spielberg.

Dennis Weaver (born June 4, 1924 – died February 24, 2006; aged 81) was an actor who played Chester Proudfoot/Goode in seasons 1-9 of Gunsmoke. Dennis would later go on to star as Deputy Marshal Sam McCloud on the NBC-TV police drama/mystery series McCloud.
