The incident left a policeman slightly injured, as a gas bottle exploded while law enforcement secured the site of the attack. That’s according to French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, who told reporters the assailant set fire to several entry doors of the synagogue, as well as several vehicles. He said the national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office had taken charge of the investigation. Police protection of synagogues, Jewish schools and shops will be stepped up across France, the government said. France, like other countries in Europe, has seen a surge in antisemitic incidents following the Hamas attacks on Israel on Oct. 7 and Israel's retaliatory assault on Gaza. French media reported the suspect was seen on surveillance video, shortly before the attack, with a Palestinian flag tied around his waist.

But despite the intense pressure from Washington, no deal has yet been reached. And ten sources familiar with the talks - including two Hamas officials and two Western diplomats - told Reuters that the impasse stems from Israeli demands it maintain a military presence in Gaza. ::Israeli military handout All the sources said Hamas was especially concerned about the latest demand that Israel keep troops along what is called the Netzarim Corridor, which bisects the narrow Gaza Strip, which prevents Palestinians' movement between north and south. Israel also wants to keep troops along the Philadelphi Corridor, a border strip between Gaza and Egypt. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office did not respond to questions about the talks, and Hamas's media office did not respond to a request for comment on this story. Fighting erupted after Hamas fighters from Gaza rampaged through Israeli communities on October 7, killing 1,200 and taking more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Israel's retaliation has killed more than 40,000 people and reduced most of the densely populated territory to rubble. U.S. President Joe Biden outlined a potential ceasefire deal in May, which would pause fighting in what has now been ten months of war, facilitate the release of Israelis hostages, a withdrawal of Israeli forces, and open negotiations on extending the truce. But disagreements emerged due to what Hamas says are new Israeli demands to maintain troops in parts of Gaza. In a statement prior to the talks last week, Netanyahu's office denied making new demands, saying its positions built on the previous proposal. Hours after her release, Argamani was able to see her terminally ill mother Liora, who had been hospitalized in Tel Aviv and was waiting for her daughter’s return. Argamani was kidnapped along with her boyfriend Avinatan Or from the Supernova festival on the morning of Oct. 7. Her boyfriend is believed to remain in captivity. More than 1,200 people were killed in Hamas's attack on southern Israel that day, according to Israeli tallies. Israel's military has since leveled swathes of the Palestinian enclave, driving nearly all of its 2.3 million people from their homes, giving rise to deadly hunger and disease and killing at least 40,000 people, according to Palestinian health authorities.

This came after State Secretary Antony Blinken ended his trip to the Middle East on Tuesday without an agreement between Israel and Hamas militants. In talks to halt fighting in the 10-month-old war, Hamas wants a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. However Israel wants to retain control of the so-called Philadelphi corridor, where it uncovered several weapons-smuggling tunnels after capturing it in late May. A White House statement said Biden and Netanyahu discussed U.S. efforts to support Israel 'against all threats from Iran, including its proxy terrorist groups Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis.' Iran has vowed retaliation over the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, which it blames on Israel. Israel hasn’t confirmed nor denied it was behind the killing.
