The Great Debaters is a 2007 American historical drama film directed by Denzel Washington from a screenplay by Robert Eisele and based on a 1997 article for American Legacy by Tony Scherman. The film follows the trials and tribulations of the Wiley College debate team in 1935 Texas. [2]
One night Farmer Jr follows Melvin & finds him trying to organize white & colored farm labor into a union to fight for their rights. When the police raid the premises, Melvin saves Farmer Jr. Melvin has a stranglehold on the debate team to the extent that he writes the arguments.

In real life, the Wiley College Debate Team didn’t enter a debate with Harvard University during the 30s.
