Ukraine's air force claimed to have carried out strikes on Russia's Kursk region with high precision glide bombs provided by the U.S. on Thursday. The air force shared the video said to show a strike on a Russian platoon strongpoint.

ABC News’ Ian Pannell reports as Ukraine launches more drone attacks on military sites and fuel depots in Russia.

STORY: This video posted online by Ukrainian special forces on Wednesday shows strikes on several pontoon crossings in Russia's Kursk region. Ukraine says it destroyed them using U.S.-made weapons. Reuters was able to confirm parts of the video from the river, coast and terrain - which matched satellite imagery of the area. Kyiv has announced a string of battlefield successes since it unexpectedly crossed into the Kursk region earlier this month. But Russia claims its forces halted Kyiv’s advance in the Kursk region, and says it has gained ground in eastern Ukraine. The military is responding to the Russian push there, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, by strengthening its forces around Pokrovsk. Drone video released Wednesday by the Ukrainian 68th brigade showed artillery strikes on Russian troops east of Pokrovsk in Donetsk region. Both sides reported being targeted by major drone attacks. Ukraine smashed through the Russian border in the Kursk region on August 6th - in an attempt to divert Russian troops from the rest of the front. Its Foreign Ministry says Kyiv has made bigger territorial gains there than Moscow has made in Ukraine this year.

Ukraine's use of drones during its war against Russia appears to be growing as Moscow decries an apparent drone attack and Ukrainian soldiers remain in the Kursk region. CBS News' Ian Lee is following the latest.

He commands Russia’s war effort. :: Russian Defence Ministry The video did not specify the exact timing of the visit - but there’s no hint of concern about events unfolding in Russia’s western Kursk region. :: 80th Separate Air Assault Halytska Brigade This Ukrainian video purports to show the start of the sudden attack at a border point near the Russian town of Sudzha. Armored vehicles storm in. These are so-called “dragon’s teeth” – part of border fortifications in Kursk that Russian media outlets said cost nearly $170 million. :: National Resistance Center of Ukraine According to a post last year from an organization created by Ukrainian special operations forces, nearly all of the Kursk border strongholds had been deserted. On social media he tells people to take shelter and issues missile warnings. On a community channel, one commenter asks, “Where are the ‘shelters’ in Sudzha?” :: Kommersant Photo/Anatoliy Zhdanov Reuters made multiple attempts to contact residents through social media, but they were ignored or blocked.   :: Sputnik :: August 7 For the first day of the incursion, Russian President Vladimir Putin remained silent. :: Russian Pool The first public remarks on Kursk came the next day, August 7. Putin called it a “large-scale provocation” from Kyiv. Military chief Gerasimov says Russian forces (quote) “stopped” a force of up to 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers... :: Sputnik :: File Although one analyst told Reuters it’s possible he may have been under pressure to deliver good news to Putin on TV… or may have been given poor information himself. For his part, Acting Governor Smirnov issued false reassurances, saying Russian soldiers and FSB border guards prevented a border breach. :: August 11, 2024 :: Mayor of Kursk Igor Kutsak via Telegram Those statements would quickly be disproved by events on the ground. Ukraine has not said much about the planning of the attack.
