Usually, a parody movie only gets made because the film it’s targeting is a cultural staple. As hilarious as Spaceballs is, it was never going to outdo the Star Wars saga.

Of course, this isn't on the same level as the first "Airplane!", but it's a good parody movie, even without the ZAZ team around. The main actors reprise their roles and that makes it seem like a legit sequel (Sorry - no Leslie Nielsen here).
Just like the original 1970 "Airport" (itself a pretty silly movie), the original spoof worked partly because of how we feel about airplanes. "Airplane II" never really seems to know whether it's about a spaceship. It's all sight gags, one-liners, puns, funny signs and scatological cross-references. There's no story.
