  2. Sleeping Beauty (1959) is not strong on story, I will admit. It embellishes little on top of the fairy tale and outside of the fairies and Maleficent (truly one of the greatest villains in classic film) none of the characters manage to rise above being mere ciphers.

  6. The animation is – as with all the early Disney’s – jaw-droppingly good. Thanks to its recent restoration, this film is also full of eye-popping colours, with the bright pinks and blues of the fairies’ frocks providing a terrific contrast to the sickly purples and greens of Maleficent’s castle.
