William Steig (/ ˈ s t iː ɡ /; November 14, 1907 – October 3, 2003) was an American cartoonist, illustrator and writer of children's books, best known for the picture book Shrek!, which inspired the film series of the same name, as well as others that included Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, Abel's Island, and Doctor De Soto.

Steig was in his 60s when he began a career in children’s literature. Encouraged by Robert Kraus, a colleague from The New Yorker and founder of Windmill Books, Steig created the letter-puzzle book C D B! and the story Roland the Minstrel Pig (both 1968).
