This article describes the history of Flanders. The definition of the territory called "Flanders" (Dutch: Vlaanderen), however, has varied throughout history. The historical county of Flanders is now split into different countries.

Flanders, Flemish Vlaanderen, formally Flemish Region, Flemish Vlaamse Gewest, region that constitutes the northern half of Belgium. Along with the Walloon Region and the Brussels-Capital Region , the self-governing Flemish Region was created during the federalization of Belgium, largely along ethnolinguistic lines, in the 1980s and ’90s.

A million soldiers from more than 50 different countries were wounded, missing or killed in action here. Entire cities and villages were destroyed, their population scattered across Europe and beyond.
