I first read the complete set of Burroughs' Barsoom novels as a teen ager in the 60's and have since re-read them a half dozen times. I was curious to see how the producers might have treated the books in their movie. In most ways I enjoyed it; in some others I was disappointed - but only slightly.\r\n\r\nThere was a bit of blurring between A Princess Of Mars and The Gods Of Mars. For instance, the Therns were in the second book in a different capacity and the shape shifter with his magic blue glove wasn't in the books at all. Burroughs didn't have Zodanga as a moving city. Also in the movie, in a nod to modern feminism, Dejah Thoris was a technical genius and inventor of a device using the Ninth Barsoomian Ray, but the novels didn't have her as this type of character. I mention these only to show where the producers made changes to attract a modern audience. They didn't actually detract from the story for me.\r\n\r\nThe greatest disappointment I have is the with the competence of management at Disney, who were clueless about what they had. This movie could have been much more successful if they had done a little homework about the characters in Burroughs' novels and marketed it slightly differently. They even changed the title from "John Carter of Mars" right before release. The reason it bombed was due to corporate mismanagement, not the production values of the movie itself.\r\n\r\nSadly, because of the above failures of Disney management, there likely won't be a sequel. It would be great to see the assembled Jeddaks declare John Carter Warlord of Barsoom. Read more
