Ukraine village devastated after dam breach
Reuters Videos17 hours agoSTORY: It's been a fortnight since a dam breach which caused massive flooding in southern Ukraine, and the scale of destruction is clearly visible in one village in the Mykolaiv region. The collapse of the dam on June 6 unleashed floodwaters across southern Ukraine and Russian-occupied parts of the Kherson region, destroying homes and cutting off supplies. Locals here in Pavlo-Marianivka say that farmlands were completely flooded, with several thousand acres of barley, sunflower and other crops destroyed. There's no gas or running water in the village. Authorities have fixed the power supply, but people are afraid to turn it on because their houses remain wet. Iryna Semenova lives in the village. "The water was up to the ceiling. Everything here was underwater. The water pressed the window out. Our belongings and all of the furniture swam around, the walls are crumbling. My mother was living here, she slept in this room. Now, everything is ruined and destroyed. It has become impossible to live here." The nearby Inhulets river's water levels have almost returned to normal, but locals say the damage has endured. Volodymyr Savchuk tore branches from his fruit trees to demonstrate the state of his garden. "It's not there anymore, just all gone. The leaves are getting all yellow. It drowned. In a week or two it'll be completely rotten." Ukraine accuses Russia of blowing up the Soviet-era Kakhovka dam, under Russian control since early days of its invasion in 2022. The Kremlin says Kyiv sabotaged the huge hydroelectric dam, to cut off a key source of water for Crimea and distract attention from a "faltering" counter-offensive against Russian forces.

And Russian officials said 29 people have died in territories that Moscow controls. The breaching of the Kakhovka Dam on June 6 unleashed floodwaters across a large area of land in southern Ukraine and in Russia-occupied parts of Ukraine, destroying farmland and cutting off supplies to civilians. More than 3,600 people have been evacuated from the flooded areas in the Kherson and Mykolaivregions, while 31 people were still missing and some 1,300 houses remained flooded That's according to Ukraine's interior ministry. Here in Hola Prystan, a city in Russian-controlled Ukraine, volunteers were seen pumping floodwater out of homes on Saturday. This woman says her only hope is God. A team of international legal experts assisting Ukraine's prosecutors in their investigation said in preliminary findings on Friday it was "highly likely" the collapse in Ukraine's Kherson region was caused by explosives planted by Russians. - 00:48Lavrov reacts to African peace plan for UkraineReuters VideosSTORY: Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying the plan was "difficult to realise". Peskov said Putin had shown interest in the plan, whose 10 points South African President Cyril Ramaphosa laid out in his presentation, and Russia would continue dialogue with the African countries. Lavrov said they had not brought the Russian leader any message from Zelenskiy. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday (June 18) gave African leaders seeking to mediate in the conflict in Ukraine a list of reasons why he believed many of their proposals were misguided, pouring cold water on a plan already largely dismissed by Kyiv. The African leaders were seeking agreement on a series of "confidence-building measures", even as Kyiv last week began a counteroffensive to push back Russian forces from the swathes of southern and eastern Ukraine that they occupy.3 days ago
- 01:58African leaders meet Putin for Ukraine peace talksReuters VideosSTORY: African leaders arrived in Saint Petersburg Saturday to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin as part of an effort to mediate in the Ukraine conflict. Here’s South African President CyriL Ramaphosa "And we are here to communicate a very clear message that we would like this war to be ended." Putin interrupted the remarks to deliver a list of reasons why he believed many of their proposals were misguided. He reiterated his position that Ukraine and the West had started the conflict long before Russia sent its armed forces over the border in February last year. He said Russia had never refused talks with the Ukrainian side, which had been blocked by Kyiv. When the African leaders called for the opening up of the Black Sea to allow them to receive grain shipments, he blamed the West saying "the crisis on the global food market is not the consequence of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine. It had started taking shape long before the Ukrainian situation developed. It started because the western countries - the U.S. and European countries - started unfounded and economically unjustified emission in order to solve their own problems connected with the COVID." The African leaders are seeking agreement on a series of "confidence building measures" even as Ukraine last week began a counteroffensive to push back Russian forces from Ukrainian territory they occupy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had said after meeting the leaders in Kyiv on Friday that peace talks with Russia would be possible only after Moscow withdrew its forces from occupied Ukrainian territory. Putin said Russia remains open to constructive dialog.3 days ago
- 01:17Russia likely behind Ukraine dam collapse - expertsReuters VideosVIDEO SHOWS: STORY: Experts with the international human rights law firm Global Rights Compliance, which is implementing Western-back efforts to support accountability for atrocities in Ukraine, visited the Kherson region from June 10-11 with Ukraine's prosecutor general and a team from the International Criminal Court. They dismissed the theory that a catastrophic dam breach could have been caused by mismanagement alone. "There's a number of different war crimes and international crimes that would come into play in this incident. The the ones that we've been looking at most closely are the war crimes of starvation, and which is part and parcel of the investigative focus that we have on this particular team. And the other possible war crimes that which we believe would fall within this frame, would be attacks on civilian objects," Murdoch added. Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused Ukraine of destroying the Kakhovka dam as a Western-backed tactic to escalate the conflict. Ukraine is investigating the blast as a war crime and possible criminal environmental destruction, or "ecocide". The vast Soviet-era Kakhovka hydroelectric dam, under Russian control since the Feb. 24 invasion, was breached in the early hours of June 6, unleashing floodwater across a swathe of the battleground in southern Ukraine, destroying farmland and cutting off water supplies to a large part of the population.4 days ago

- 01:48Blasts in Kyiv as African leaders arrive in UkraineReuters VideosSTORY: At least two explosions rocked Kyiv on Friday (June 16) as African leaders arrived on a mission of peace. The delegation, including leaders from South Africa, Senegal and Zambia, hopes to mediate between Russia and Ukraine. But their welcome to the Ukrainian capital was amid smoke and sirens. The leaders were seen entering a hotel to use its air raid shelter. The all-clear was later issued. South Africa's presidency tweeted that the mission was "proceeding well and as planned". The African leaders began their trip by visiting Bucha. It is the town outside Kyiv where Ukraine says Russian occupiers carried out executions, rapes and torture. International investigators are collecting evidence of possible war crimes. Russia denies the allegations. According to a draft framework document, the peace mission could propose a series of "confidence building measures" during initial efforts at mediation. That might include for the Ukrainian side a pullback of Russian troops and the removal of tactical nuclear weapons from Belarus. The document indicated that the implementation of an International Criminal Court arrest warrant targeting Vladimir Putin could be suspended and relief given from Western sanctions imposed on Russia. An agreement on the cessation of hostilities could follow, it said, and would need to be accompanied by negotiations between Russia and the West. Kyiv says its own peace initiative, which envisages the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian land, must be the basis for any settlement of the war. After meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday the African delegation will head to St Petersburg on Saturday (June 17) for talks with Putin.5 days ago

- 02:01Putin claims Ukraine losses 'catastrophic'Reuters VideosSTORY: Russia's President Vladimir Putin claimed Ukraine's counter offensive has so far failed, saying, without providing evidence, that Ukrainian forces had suffered 'catastrophic' casualties. Russian State TV broadcast Putin speaking to war reporters and military bloggers on Tuesday at the Kremlin...in some of his widest-ranging remarks since the invasion of Ukraine. During several hours of questioning... he was shown claiming Ukraine had lost 25 to 30% of military vehicles supplied by Western countries, and that its human losses were 10 times higher than Russia's. Reuters was unable to immediately verify his assertions. Putin did acknowledge that Russia needed to strengthen its defenses against attacks on its own territory...and warned he may need to impose a so-called 'sanitary zone' inside Ukraine to prevent such attacks. "And if this continues, then we will have to consider the possibility - I say this very carefully - of creating some kind of buffer zone on Ukrainian territory to the kind of distance from which it would be impossible to reach our territory." When Putin ordered Russian forces into Ukraine in February last year, one of their first acts was to try to capture the capital Kyiv which they failed to do. Putin did not rule out a second attempt to take Kyiv, saying it was only him who could answer the question. He did add, however, that there was no need for a further mobilization of men to fight - for now. Russian forces are currently battling Ukrainian soldiers along a 600-mile frontline, well away from the capital. Ukraine says it will never rest until every Russian soldier is ejected from its land.1 week ago

(June 13)1 week ago- 02:16Ukraine counteroffensive: inside a retaken townReuters VideosSTORY: On this dusty road in southeast Ukraine, Reuters journalists have made the first independent confirmation that the Ukrainian military's counteroffensive is gaining ground... ...now in its early stages, although Russia's government hasn't officially acknowledged the loss of this village or several others. This is the village of Neskuchne, in the Donetsk region. It once had a population of several hundred. Now its streets are silent except for artillery fire in the distance. Not a single building is undamaged. Artem is a soldier with Ukraine's territorial defense forces and is telling us the place was under Russian occupation for a year and half. The Russians were chased out three days ago, he says, and "these are Ukrainian lands." It's not clear how much momentum Ukraine's assault is carrying right now, or the losses for each side. This video released by Russia's military on Tuesday is said to show American-made Bradley Fighting Vehicles and German-made Leopard tanks captured from Ukraine elsewhere on the frontline. Reuters couldn't immediately confirm the account, or the location, or when it was filmed. But Russia has made other claims in recent days of destroying Western armored vehicles that were donated to Ukraine. In Neskuchne, three bodies litter the ground said to be Russian forces. Artem says his unit watched how one of them died on a drone camera. The Russians were carrying their comrade and left him here. These are still the early days of the counteroffensive. Tens of thousands of fresh Ukrainian troops and hundreds of Western armored vehicles are yet to be committed to the fight. But Russia has also had months to prepare, with multiple defensive lines and fallback positions, meaning Ukraine's advance doesn't necessarily mean its breached through.1 week ago
