I definitely don't think it was a deliberate choice, and more a case of Hartnell just trying to work out how to play the character (most of his previous roles were quite authoritative and he seems to have brought that energy to his initial portrayal of The Doctor) but you can really see a kind of character development happening over the first couple of seasons.
