He won a World Series title with the Cleveland Indians in 1948 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971.
Paige became the first African-American pitcher to pitch in the World Series when he worked two-thirds of an inning in Game 5. Paige pitched for the Indians again in 1949, then spent three seasons with the St. Louis Browns from 1951-53, earning two All-Star Game selections.

He played his last game in organized baseball in 1966 — a full 40 years later — for a Virginia club called the Peninsula Grays.
Satchel Paige, born in Mobile, AL, was the seventh of twelve children. At the age of twelve, he was sentenced to five years at the Industrial School for Negro Children in Mount Meigs, Alabama, where he learned the value of education baseball.
