Franz Joseph (born August 18, 1830, Schloss Schönbrunn, near Vienna, Austria—died November 21, 1916, Schloss Schönbrunn) was the emperor of Austria (1848–1916) and king of Hungary (1867–1916), who divided his empire into the Dual Monarchy, in which Austria and Hungary coexisted as equal partners.
A little under two months later, Franz Joseph officially turned the Habsburg territories into the Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary, putting an end to his absolutist rule and giving Hungary a measure of control over its finances, defence, and foreign affairs.
He died during World War 1. Charles I of Austria became emperor in 1916 and reigned from 1916-1918. Franz Joseph's 68-year reign is the third-longest in the history of continental Europe (after those of Louis XIV of France and Johann II, Prince of Liechtenstein ).
